Ways to Help Your Second Grader at Home

  1. Assist your child with memorizing addition/subtraction facts (sums to 18). You may use flashcards, computer games, skill and drill exercises, etc.
  2. Listen to your child read regularly. Ask questions about setting, characters, facts, details, and beginning, middle, and end of the story.
  3. Encourage your child to retell a short book he/she has read. Be sure the correct sequence of events is used.
  4. Allow your child to count the change in your pocket or wallet at least once a week. (up to $1.00)
  5. Remind your child to read Accelerated Readers and take tests in the classroom.
  6. Practice telling time to the half-hour.
  7. Encourage your child to measure real objects around your home in centimeters and inches.
