Welcome to Bugg Drama!
How can we use drama to help us understand ourselves and the other people in Bugg's backyard?
Hello, my name is Ms. Umstead and I am the new drama teacher at Bugg. I am so excited to be here! I have a BFA in K-12 Theatre Education for UNC Greensboro . Last year I worked at Swift Creek Elementary and Turner Creek Elementary teaching drama, music and Readers' Theatre. I look forward to meeting my new Bugg family. Read on to find out more about what is going on in your child's drama classroom this quarter.
Special Programs- The special programs classes are studying the seasons, 5 senses and animals in drama class. We are also using puppets and props to tell stories.Kindergarten - In kindergarten, we are studying stories and characters. We are also learning literacy through drama by acting out letters and looking at the similarities and differences in words. We are participating in role play situations of various adult scenarios, like a trip to the grocery store.
First Grade - In first grade, we are working on body control. We are exploring different levels, speeds and styles of movement. We are using our imaginations to create specific environments to explore.
Second Grade- In second grade, we are acting out fairy tales. We use these fairy tales to discuss sequence of events, character traits and personal connections.
Third Grade - In third grade, we are holding mock elections. Students will select an office to run for, write and deliver and speech and vote. After the mock election, we will be working on scenes, directing and blocking.
Fourth Grade- The fourth graders are participating in The Hundred Dresses Project, a collaboration between Raleigh Little Theatre, Whole Foods and Wake County Public School System. We are reading The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes in their class. In drama class, we are acting out parts of the play and participating in conflict resolution role playing.
Fifth Grade- The fifth graders are writing plays. After we write our plays, we will type them. A few plays will be selected and we will practice our plays and perform them in an informance in the winter. We are focusing on writing, directing and acting.
