Wednesdays and Early Release Days
Every Wednesday school will end one hour early (at 2:10) so teachers can participate in Professional Learning Teams (PLT) meetings. Also, eight of these days students will be released at 1:10 for whole staff professional development.

Local Magnet School Receives Merit Award as a Magnet School of Distinction
Bugg Elementary School to be recognized April 27
Bugg Elementary School has been named a Magnet School of Distinction by the national organization Magnet Schools of America . School representatives will be honored at the 27 th Magnet Schools of America Conference hosted by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in Charlotte , North Carolina . School representatives will receive a plaque during an awards ceremony for their selection as a national Magnet School of Distinction winner.
Bugg Elementary located in Raleigh , NC , serves students' in grades kindergarten through fifth from Wake County . This school was selected from among candidates' nationwide based on criteria such as desegregation, innovative instructional strategies, student achievement, and parent and community involvement.
Bugg Elementary believes in the development of the whole child through the fine arts. Students participate in dance, chorus, drama, and media classes. They are exposed to state-of-the-art technology, and participate in a rigorous curriculum that stresses learning through the arts.
Sandra Day, President of Magnet Schools of America , and Dr. Robert G. Brooks, Executive Director, will present the Magnet School of Distinction Award during the national conference, which runs from April 26-29 at the Charlotte Westin/Hilton and Convention Center in Charlotte , North Carolina . The Awards presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at the Opening Session. Attendees will include more than 1,000 school administrators and teachers from magnet schools and districts across the nation.
Magnet Schools were initially developed during the 1970s as a strategy to eliminate the inequity of segregation in public schools across America . Specially designed curriculums with unique educational themes were place in minority-dominated schools to attract majority students to improve the racial balance of the schools and to increase the quality of education.
